Review: In my opinion this is a book that every teenager (boys as well as girls) and their parents should read. It is a thought provoking story about cyber security and the consequences of what you post online. Having met some of my closest friends online I consider myself lucky that everything turned out ok.

This is the story about Taylor and Sierra, two teenage girls who like most teenagers these days live their lives online. The girls have been best friends their entire lives but Taylor has always been jealous of Sierra. Sierra is very pretty, always gets what she wants, has wealthy parents (although they’re not always around) and can have any boy she chooses including it seems the one boy Taylor has been crushing on for quite some time. Taylor has had enough.

Sierra has had all internet privileges taken away by her parents as she stayed out with a boy one night and lied about it but got caught, so she uses Taylor’s computer to meet Jacob Jones online. When Jacob starts messaging Taylor she is beyond excited and thinks he likes her better than Sierra. Then she finds out he is messaging both her and Sierra and has made plans with Sierra to meet up one Friday afternoon and Taylor is devastated.

When Sierra asks Taylor to cover for her while she goes to meet Jacob, Taylor isn’t happy about it but it is her best friend so she agrees. However when Sierra doesn’t come home that night, or the next day or night, Taylor is torn as to what to do. Should she tell her mum and get her best friend in trouble or wait and see if she turns up? By Sunday afternoon she eventually decides to tell her mum and things quickly escalate from there.

The police become involved as Sierra is now classified as a missing person, Taylor’s computer and phone are taken as evidence as well as those of her friends, Sierra’s mum won’t even look at Taylor as she blames her for what has happened and Taylor is not only worried about her friend but is now feeling guilty for not speaking up earlier.

When it is determined that Jacob Jones doesn’t really exist, Taylor decides to start a website called Risk that helps teens discuss those they have met online, share experiences or just to let others know that they are going to meet these people in case things go bad. The website becomes a huge success with the help of Taylor’s friends and computer studies teacher and Taylor even starts going to other schools in the area sharing her experience with others.

Fleur Ferris has called upon her experiences as a police officer and paramedic to write a very thought provoking and thrilling novel. I’m not usually a great fan of contemporary however I absolutely enjoyed reading this and it kept me interested until the very end.
