Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a galactic senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by side, but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.
When the power-mad Emperor learns Sidonia’s father is participating in a rebellion, he summons Sidonia to the Galactic court. She is to serve as a hostage. Now, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia. She must become her. Nemesis travels to the court disguised as Sidonia—a killing machine masquerading in a world of corrupt politicians and two-faced senators’ children. It’s a nest of vipers with threats on every side, but Nemesis must keep her true abilities a secret or risk everything.
As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns there is something more to her than just deadly force. Things No One Tells You About Writing A YA Novel
1) It’s hard to kill your darlings. Putting time and effort into building a character makes it difficult to end their lives, even fictional ones ended for dramatic effect.
2) A plot point some people love most of all will inevitably be a plot point some people loathe more than anything else.
3) Readers never, never latch the things you expect. It’s always something you gave little thought to, or to which you attached little importance.
4) People ship strange character combinations.
5) You are entering a community of incredibly nice and supportive people. The kidlit community is the absolute best.
6) A profusion of one-star reviews may actually be a better sign than a bunch of meh’s. At least people feel something, and feel it strongly, in response to your work. That’s better than people being indifferent to it, because at least they’ll talk about it- if only to rant.
7) However recently you graduated high school, you will still be shocked at your first event with high school kids when you see how young they look. Surely they didn’t look so young when you were that age! (Okay, I can’t attest to the same if a writer is in the 16-19 age range).
8) It’s easy to psych yourself out. It’s easy to succumb to pressure and forget that you actually love writing. When you do remember, your work becomes your greatest pleasure, and that’s a rarity in this world. It’s a gift.
