Daughter of Smoke and Bone tour of Prague

“Fairy-tale city. From the air, red rooftops hug a kink in a dark river, and by night the forested hills appear as spans of black nothing against the dazzle of the lit castle, the spiking Gothic towers, the domes great and small. The river captures all the lights and teases them out, long and wavering, and the side-slashing rain blurs it all to a dream” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

.
Hi everyone. During my recent trip I added some pictures to Twitter that were a combination of two of my biggest loves - Prague and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. It was suggested that I do a post of my pictures relating the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series - so here it is! I cannot describe Prague in any way that does it justice - but Laini Taylor certainly can! All quotes in this post are from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor.

“The falling snow and the early hour conspired to paint Prague ghostly, like a tin type photograph, all silver and haze” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Charles Bridge

Icon of Prague, the medieval bridge crossed the Vltava between Old Town and the Little Quarter. Gothic bridge towers rose on both sides, and the whole span—pedestrian-only—was lined by monumental statues of saints” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Charles Bridge in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou crossed the Charles bridge many times throughout DoSaB during her time in Prague.
  • Charles Bridge was where Zuzana had her giant puppeteer set up, and she became a discarded, but amazingly awesome marionette.
  • Akiva also watched Karou (and Zuzana and Mik) on the Charles Bridge before his fight very public with Karou.
  • The Charles Bridge is where everything about his past and present clicked for Akiva - where he realised why Brimstone had sent Karou the wishbone and who Karou really was.
  • But most importantly, this is where the fight happened. Yes, that fight. Where Akiva, Liraz and Hazael exposed themselves and brothers and sister fought over one blue-haired girl.

There were things falling from the sky! Sadly it was a meteor shower, not angels coming down to fight on the bridge

This camera was strategically placed on the bridge - ready to capture another angel fight

.

Prague Castle

“Above it all loomed the castle on the hill, its silhouette as sharp as thorns. By night it was floodlit, bathed in eerie light” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Prague Castle in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou’s apartment had a view that was “a direct line over the rooftops of Old Town to the castle”.
  • Zuz’s puppeteer and marionette show on the Charles Bridge had a “photo-perfect backdrop of Prague Castle on the hill”.
  • Karou and Akiva flew towards the Prague Castle before landing at the “cathedral at its heart” to have breakfast.

St. Vitus Cathedral

“It was a Gothic beast, carved and weathered like some tortured cliff battered by ages of storms” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

St. Vitus Cathedral in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou and Akiva flew to cathedral the morning after their mid-air flight and had breakfast perched “upon the cupola of the bell tower”

This is the view that Karou and Akiva had that morning as they watched the sun rise

Old Town

There was a deceptive tangling of alleys that gave you, gargoyles tiptoeing away, stones like puzzle pieces rearranging themselves into new configurations while you weren’t looking. Prague entranced you, lured you in, like the mythic fey who trick travellers deep into forest until they’re lost beyond hope” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Old Town in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Kaz’s vampire tour was in Old Town.
  • Karou used her knowledge of the cobbled maze of Old Town to lure out a stalker so she could confront them (this was Akiva, and it resulted in the mid-air fight).
  • Karou’s apartment is located in Old Town - her apartment had a view over the rooftops of Old Town.

TÝN Church

“The towers of Týn Church reared up like devil’s horns” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Týn Church in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • “The bells of Týn Church tolled nine” during Karou and Akiva’s in-air flight along Karlova.
  • As Akiva watched Karou’s apartment from a rooftop “The towers of Týn Church reared up like devil’s horns behind the row of buildings across the street, in one of which was Karou’s flat”

Devil’s Stream

“There’s the mill wheel just beside the bridge - the cute wooden mill wheel every tourist to Prague snaps a photo of” - Night of Cake and Puppets

Devil’s Stream in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou and Zuz where constantly near the Devil’s Stream. Even Kishmish frequented there. That is because Poison Kitchen is nearby! The girl’s favourite café filled with gas masks and coffins is located beyond a walled graveyard down by Devil’s Stream. Sadly I could not find Poison Kitchen - considering it is fictional, I would have been surprised if I did… but I still hoped I would.

Devil’s Stream in Night of Cake and Puppets:

  • Devil’s Stream is where it all started for Zuzana and Mik. Thanks to some treasure maps, our favourite rabid fairy and violin boy finally found each other at Devil’s Stream.

Sadly this little guy wasn’t giving up where Poison Kitchen is hidden

Maltese Square

“But on the quieter lanes, the wintry peace might have hailed from another time. Snow and stone and ghostlight” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Maltese Square in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou and Zuz go to art school in a pink Baroque Palace near the Maltese Square.
  • This is also where Kaz nibbled Karou’s neck on her way to school one cold morning.

KRÁLODVORSKÁ

“If found, please return to Králodvorská 59, no. 12, Prague. You will be rewarded with cosmic goodwill and hard cash. Thank you” - Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Although Karou’s apartment itself may not exist, the street does!

Karou’s apartment in Daughter of Smoke and Bone:

  • Karou threw Kaz through a window of her apartment building.
  • This is where Karou recovered from her injuries from her first fight with Akiva after she was thrown out by Brimstone.
  • Karou told Zuzana that the creatures from her art where real here.
  • Kishmish flew to Karou’s apartment to find her, to give her the wishbone from Brimstone.
  • Akiva spent the night with Karou here after their fight in the middle of Prague.

ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

“Český Krumlov, the little jewel box of a city in southern Bohemia” - Night of Cake and Puppets

Český Krumlov in Night of Cake and Puppets:

  • In Night of Cake and Puppets, you get to hear the story of Karou’s first visit to Český Krumlov, some of Zuz’s family history - and the story of ‘The Puppet That Bites’.

There were some nasty looking puppets and marionettes, but thankfully none that bite. But I did find a Karou marionette!

I hope you enjoyed my stroll through the Czech Republic, the Daughter of Smoke and Bone way!!!

Edit: I have another Daughter of Smoke and Bone Tour of Prague post! This edition has new pictures and new quotes and visits some new spots in Prague - including Brimstone’s Door! Don’t believe me? Visit the 2016 edition here.

What do you think?

  • Keely says:

I’m actually going to Prague this summer (in about a month and two days!) and your pictures definitely have me stoked. I didn’t know Daughter of Smoke and Bone is set there and because of you I have the perfect book to read! Thanks so much!

    • Kristy says:

Oh wow Keely, I am so jealous! I love Prague, and I am sure you will too!
I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to know that this post has made you want to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone! It is my favourite book of all time, and the fact I have found another way to help someone find this book makes me so happy! Thank you :)

  • Carolyn says:

Love the post, makes me miss it so much that I want to go back there. Love how you linked the photos to quotes from the books

Now that I have been there I really need to re-read Daughter and Cake and Puppets again.

  • Asti says:

I’m so glad you did this! It’s awesome seeing all your photos in one place - so beautiful - and the way you connected them to the story by pulling quotes and stating what things too place there is awesome!

I have a plan. You need to move to Prague and open up Poison Kitchen yourself! Then once the movie comes out you can become like this tourist attraction and even set up tours across Prague like this connecting things to the book. Do it! :D

    • Kristy says:

Thanks Asti. A few mentioned the idea to me, so I decided to do it. And you know, any excuse to delve into DoSaB and Prague again :)
Oh, and I LOVE your plan!!! I was looking for a way to move to Prague, and I think you just gave me the perfect way to do it! x

  • CJ Listro says:

WHOA, this is amazing! I’ve only been to Prague once and it was long before Shadow and Bone. I’ve always tried to picture places I’d been while reading, but seeing them like this is perfect. I’m so excited that her street is real! If only the door were still there.

    • Kristy says:

Thank you CJ. I am glad you liked it. Sadly I couldn’t find the door - I was keeping my eye out. Prague is filled with amazing doors, but none with handprints burnt into them.

  • Kaja says:

This is SO COOL! I’m a huge fan of this trilogy. Thanks so much for compiling this tour :)

  • Sarah says:

What beautiful pictures! It’s great being able to visualize where everything in the book happened, and the the descriptions from what happened there in the book are wonderful! :D That must have been an awesome trip!

  • Beautiful pictures, Kristy. And a great post. It’s nice seeing the real places depicted in the book. It looks like such a beautiful place to visit. Maybe one day.

  • Great post, Kristy. The pictures are beautiful. It’s great to see the places depicted in the book.

  • […] Kristy takes you on a Daughter of Smoke and Bone Tour of Prague. […]

  • This is great! I’m actually reading the first book right now, and after meeting Laini Taylor I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. It’s nice to see what the actual setting looks like in real life. Thanks for sharing Kristy :)

    • Kristy says:

Thank you Eugenia. I hope you enjoy the series half as much as I did. And Laini is so lovely, isn’t she?
I found the settings were described perfectly (especially for Prague), so I wanted to share my experience and link it to the book, to not only give someone the opportunity to see it for themselves, but to show how perfectly Laini described Prague.

  • Ashlee says:

I only just began to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone a couple days ago and already I’m about finished with the book. I first saw the book at my local library and couldn’t check it out (or didn’t) because I was busy with Mortal Instruments but I had seen it on ebay for a great price brand new and so now needless to say I have the entire series and I’m very happy that I decided to give the book a chance because it is one of my new favorites and seeing these pictures of Prague is just breathtaking it’s like stepping into Karou’s world just for a few short moments. I’m ranting now lol so I should stop.

And I am also glad that you enjoyed my pictures :D I am always happy to help someone step into this world for a little (or long) while!
And you can rant here any time you like ;)

      • Ashlee says:

No problem! I just finished up Daughter of Smoke & Bone on my break yesterday while at work and now I’m already on chapter 4 of Days of Blood and Starlight. I love this series!

How on earth did you take such beautiful pictures of Charles Bridge? When did you go there, to find it deserted like this? This is a great post, I love the quotes and pictures. And your pictures are beautiful! I’m going to go re-read Daughter of Smoke&Bones now. Love

    • Kristy says:

      Hi Ginevra!
      Thank you :D
And three words explain those Charles Bridge photos - very early morning. Very very early! But it was worth it. To see the Charles Bridge basically deserted was amazing - especially the morning it was foggy.
I hope you enjoy your re-read of Daughter!

  • Chachic says:

This is such a great post! Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is the only YA book I know that is set in Prague. I’m traveling there in a couple of weeks so I’m thinking of rereading the book. :)

  • […] Hi everyone. Back in 2014 I did my first every Daughter of Smoke and Bone tour of Prague post. I absolutely adored doing this this post because it brings two of my favourite things […]

  • Zuzanna says:

Hi! These photos are great! I love daughter of smoke and bones and I really would love to visit Prague and I have one more question. Is there any chance that restaurant, poisont kitchen really exists? It would be great :D
PS. Sory for any mistakes I’m not from english-speaking country.

    • Kristy says:

      Hello Zuzanna
So sorry for the late reply! I didn’t get the notification that you had commented.
I am sorry, the Poison Kitchen does not really exist. But everything else does.

  • Tamara says:

Thanks for the post. it’s going to be perfect for my visit in Prague… this Weekend! :)))
